I've tried going this route for a little bit with clothing, but I've found that buying clothing that may "cost a bit more up front" doesn't necessarily lead to an equivalent improvement in durability. Especially where sweaters are concerned, I've gone from buying J. Sweaters to buying expensive sweaters at Nordstrom Rack and Filene's Basement, and they suffer just as much from pilling and unwanted stretching.
